The Benton Central Girls’ Wrestling team took their first meet, the Delphi Invitational, by storm this weekend, placing 6th out of 15 teams! This is quite the feat for their small team. Out of 14 weight classes, they only have 6 girls wrestling and managed to contend with schools presenting a full roster! At 105 and 130 pounds, respectively, Laurana Dillon and Isabel Sayre went undefeated on Saturday. Going 5-0, the girls dominated and came out as champions in their weight classes! Ray Drake also managed an impressive third-place finish in the 235-pound weight class, going 4-1 through the day for a podium-placing performance. Maddie Peterson, Khloe Kiefer, and Kenadie Hopkins, 125, 135, and 145 pounds respectively, managed 4th place finishes at their first-ever tournament! Peterson went 3-2 through the day with two forfeits, a win, and two losses for her fourth-place finish, after many hard-fought matches. Kiefer went 2-3 through the day and won her first match by major decision, with a final score of 26-18. Hopkins went 2-3 with a third-round pin in her first match for a strong 4th-place finish. Sienna Holscher finished the day strong with a 5th-place finish going 3-2, with losses against two former state placers.
This a great start to the wrestling season for the Lady Bison, given that this was 3 wrestlers’ first tournaments ever, and a few wrestlers wrestled in a heavier weight class than normal to gain experience. The Lady Bison take on Parke Heritage this Thursday, the 14th, at 6 in the Atha gym! Show up and support these tough ladies!
