The boys wrestling team has had quite the season. Nine of their wrestlers advanced to Regionals and three of them moved on to Semi-State. Ronnie Jenkins, Owen Pearson, and Joseph Mendoza all competed in Semi-State at East Chicago Central High School. Junior Joseph Mendoza placed high enough and will be advancing to the State Finals!
Joseph Mendoza wrestles in the 120lb weight class and has been phenomenal in his junior season. He wields an impressive 25-3 record up to this point. In the Regional he faced off against Benjamin Flick from Highland in the first round and won by a technical fall in 5:38. Joseph moved on to wrestle against Aidan Diaz from Penn High School. He won by a 10-8 decision in a close matchup. Then he went up against Lincoln Underwood from Portage. Joseph lost by a fall in 1:16. In the final match, he had to go against Chance Smith from Mishawaka High School. The match ended in a loss for Joseph, but he still qualified for the State Finals!
The State Finals will be held Friday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the home of the Indiana Pacers. Matches will begin at 3:00 P.M. Joseph will compete against Brownsburg’s Revin Dickman who has a 24-1 record. It’s going to be a tough match, but anything is possible.
