The drive was created by Marria Miranda, Paizley Stepp, and Valerie Caliz in their JAG class. They are the service learning team, meaning they come up with ways to get their class involved in the community and create partnerships with local businesses. They had decided that they wanted to do a drive for toiletries to help the community since that was not something that the school had done before. They wanted to be able to help people with the coming holiday season, knowing that this season can be harder for some families.
They had to talk to the Glimmers of Hope to collaborate with them. They know a lot of our community visits this place to receive extra help- whether that is clothing, essentials, house decor, music, etc. Their group also had to present to our principal Mr. Robb to make sure it was being completed in a safe and organized manner. With the support of the school, peers, and JAG, they were able to have their drive.
At the end of the drive, they have a total of 695 items!
Interview: (Marria Miranda, Co-Founder)
- Why did you guys start? When did you think of the idea? Why is it beneficial?
- “We are in the service learning team in our JAG class, which just means coming up with ways to get our class involved with our community and creating partnerships with local businesses. Our first task was to come up with an organization, and since CAAP already does a food drive and clothes drive, we didn’t want to do that too so we decided on toiletries. A few weeks prior, Glimmers of Hope had reached out to our class offering volunteer opportunities for the volunteer hours we need so we thought we should base it around them. Also, because they help a lot of people in and around the community, and with the colder season coming around, we know this time is harder for some people without the same resources as others. That was around mid-October to early-November, and we made it official the week before fall break. We had to present our idea to Mr. Robb before we could officially do it.”
