On Monday, November 4, our Benton Central Spell Bowl team competed in the Area Competition at McCutcheon High School.
“We didn’t know at the competition. We knew the day after,” Fitch responded in an interview. The Benton Central Spell Bowl team didn’t have to wait long for their placement though. With a score of 58 out of 90 points, Our spell bowl team placed first in our class! This placed the Benton Central Spell Bowl team second by only three points behind McCutcheon; With Emily Fitch and Lily Butzke spelling every word correctly while Elijah Coffman earned a nearly perfect score.
“This is a lot, this is not how it happens,” Coffman said in an interview, cementing the disbelief that these awesome spell-bowlers felt when they realized they had passed on to the state level.
“At the end of the day, our school has never won spell bowl; So the goal is to win state!” Butzke stated. With Benton Central’s spell bowl teaming coming this far already, we have a lot of confidence in our spell-bowlers winning state!
