The boys’ wrestling team has been on a roll this season with some pretty respectable wins. The Bison took down 5A Lafayette Jefferson at home for the first time in history! They have also taken home gold twice this year as the Nick Spitler Invite and Twin Lakes Invitational champions. The Bison went to their Hoosier Conference on January 18. They took fourth out of nine teams, with one individual champion and two runner-ups. The Bison’s champion was Junior Joseph Mendoza at 120 pounds, and the runner-ups were Junior Kaleb Wallace at 150 pounds and Freshman Ivan Orwick at 157 pounds.
The Benton Central boys wrestling Sectional takes place on February 1st at 9 AM at Twin Lakes High School. They are in the Twin Lakes Sectional which includes nine schools: Rensselaer, Frontier, Logansport, North White, Pioneer, Tri-County, West Central, and Twin Lakes. They defeated each of these teams throughout the regular season with the exception of Rensselaer. The boys have had a very strong season and believe that they will beat all of these teams, including getting revenge on Rensselaer for their loss earlier in the season. It will be a tough challenge, but the Bison are ready to take it on!
We interviewed Senior wrestler Jackson Bunch. We asked Jackson if he thought they could beat Rensselaer this time around. Jackson said:
“Last time we matched up against them we weren’t on our game. This time we’ll be ready.”
Jackson is having a great Senior season with a record of (22-7). Jackson won his weight class during sectionals last year and looks to repeat that achievement and advance to the Regional and beyond.
